The University of Firenze Launches a New English-Taught Degree Programme in Medicine and Surgery

The University of Florence is expanding its international academic offering with the launch of a new Medicine and Surgery degree program, entirely taught in English. Starting from the upcoming academic year, the programme will offer 50 places and is designed to attract both Italian and international students seeking a medical education with a strong global perspective. For the time being, the programme is open to European applicants, including non-EU citizens who hold a valid Italian residence permit.

The six-year programme provides comprehensive scientific and clinical training in line with international standards for medical education. Its aim is to prepare future medical doctors capable of addressing the challenges of modern healthcare through a multidisciplinary approach focused on prevention, patient care, innovation, and scientific excellence.

The curriculum comprises 360 ECTS credits, including a substantial practical component. At least 60 ECTS credits are dedicated to hospital rotations and clinical placements carried out in the University's teaching hospitals and affiliated clinics. The programme concludes with a final thesis and its discussion before a committee, enabling graduates to practice as medical doctors in accordance with current Italian legislation. 

The introduction of the English-taught programme marks an important step in the University's internationalisation strategy, broadening its educational portfolio and attracting students from around the world. This international environment promotes the exchange of ideas and interaction among people from diverse cultural and intellectual backgrounds. Teaching in English will foster international mobility, academic collaboration, and the development of healthcare professionals equipped to work effectively in multicultural and global medical settings.

Admission to the programme is regulated and follows the national procedures established for degree programmes in Medicine and Surgery. To be admitted, applicants must pass the International Medical Admissions Test (IMAT). In its first year of operation, the programme will offer a total of 50 places.
