EU and non-EU candidates: the first distinction to understand

IMAT cut-offs for EU students
IMAT cut-offs for non EU students
The IMAT 2026 rankings were officially published today, Monday, October 26. For thousands of candidates who took the International Medical Admissions Test, the entrance exam for English-taught Medicine programs in Italy, this marks the beginning of a crucial stage: understanding their ranking position and their chances of securing a place.
But how does the IMAT ranking system work? What are the differences between EU and non-EU candidates?
The first point to clarify is the distinction between EU and non-EU candidates. The two categories are subject to different admission procedures, with rankings and seat quotas depending on the applicable regulations and the official provisions for the 2026/2027 academic year.
EU candidates follow the admission procedure established for applicants competing for places under the applicable national rules. To understand their chances of admission, candidates need to consider their ranking position, the preferences they submitted, and the number of available places at the different universities.
The procedure is generally different for non-EU candidates residing abroad. Admission is linked to the university they have selected and to the places reserved for international applicants.
