IMAT 2025 test information (2026 informations aren't out yet)
The IMAT is the official entrance exam in English for Medicine and Surgery in Italy. Each year a ministerial decree defines registration deadlines, test centres, available seats and the detailed syllabus. We continuously monitor the latest call and help you interpret dates, procedures and documents so you can focus on preparation instead of bureaucracy.
This information is based on the latest official IMAT 2025 decree and may be updated when the IMAT 2026 call is published

Test IMAT 2025:
- 17 September 2025 - at 11:00 (Italian time)
- Duration: 100 minutes
IMAT 2026 is expected to follow a very similar calendar; we will update this section as soon as the new decree is published
Who can take the IMAT?
A single national exam for access to Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics, and Veterinary Medicine in English
Open to:
- EU candidates and non-EU candidates resident in Italy or equivalent status, competing in the main national ranking.
- Non-EU candidates residing abroad, competing in a dedicated reserved ranking managed by universities.
Structure & scoring of the test (IMAT 2025)
60 multiple-choice questions, 5 options, 1 correct answer.
Question breakdown:
- 4 Reading & general knowledge
- 5 Logical reasoning & problem solving
- 23 Biology
- 15 Chemistry
- 13 Physics & Mathematics
Marking scheme (max 90 points):
- +1.5 points for each correct answer
- −0.4 points for each wrong answer
- 0 points for each omitted answer
Minimum score to be eligible:
- 20 points for EU and equivalent candidates (main ranking)
- For non-EU candidates residing abroad, only a score > 0 is required; candidates scoring 0 or less are excluded from the ranking.
Online registration on Universitaly only
Opening: 26 August 2025
Deadline: 9 September 2025 at 15:00 (GMT+2) – no extensions
During registration you:
- Choose your degree course(s) (Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary)
- Indicate your preferred universities
- Select the test centre, in Italy or abroad, among those listed in the decree’s Table A.
