How to prepare for the IMAT 2025

The IMAT, or International Medical Admissions Test, is the entrance exam for accessing Medicine and Surgery and Dentistry degree programs taught in English at Italian public universities. But here’s the big news: starting this year, the IMAT is also valid for the Veterinary Medicine program in English!

The test is also open to international students and is not subject to the Semestre Filtro (filter semester). This means that if you get in, you’re in for good — no selection semester and no barrier exams.

When is the test?

The IMAT 2025 will take place on September 17 at 11:00 AM .

It’s the same date as last year, with only one difference: international candidates must pay attention to time zones, as the test is administered simultaneously worldwide .

What is the IMAT for?

With just one test, you can compete for admission to three degree programs:

  • Medicine and Surgery (LM-41)
  • Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics (LM-46)
  • Veterinary Medicine (LM-42)

The test content is the same in all locations, both in Italy and abroad. The syllabus and the list of countries where the test is held remain unchanged from 2024.

How is the IMAT 2025 structured?

You’ll have 100 minutes to answer 60 multiple-choice questions , each with only one correct answer.

Question breakdown:

  • 4 General Knowledge
  • 5 Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving
  • 23 Biology
  • 15 Chemistry
  • 13 Physics and Mathematics

The test is paper-based , allowing you to move freely between questions, skip those you’re unsure about, and go back at any time. You can start with whichever subject you prefer — Biology, Logic, or even the last questions first.

Scoring system:

  • Correct answer: +1.5 points
  • Wrong answer: –0.4 points
  • No answer: 0 points
  • Maximum score: 90 points

Minimum score to qualify:

  • EU and equivalent candidates: at least 20 points
  • Non-EU candidates residing abroad: any score above zero

What about candidates with disabilities or SLDs?

The IMAT provides accommodations for eligible candidates:

  • +50% extra time for candidates with recognized disabilities or impairments
  • +30% extra time for students with Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs) — can be increased in severe cases

Italian certifications are accepted even if not updated due to Covid. Foreign certifications must be legalized and translated.

What’s new for IMAT 2025

Compared to 2024, there are two major changes:

  1. Veterinary Medicine officially joins the IMAT Last year, admission to the English-taught Veterinary Medicine program followed separate rules; this year, it’s included under the IMAT decree.
  2. Two separate national rankings In 2024, there was a single ranking list for EU and non-EU candidates. In 2025, there will be two distinct national rankings : One for EU and equivalent candidates One for non-EU candidates residing abroad.

How do the rankings work?

In the case of tied scores, the following criteria will be applied in order:

  1. Higher Biology score
  2. Higher Chemistry score
  3. Higher Physics/Mathematics score
  4. Higher Logic score
  5. Higher Comprehension score
  6. Possession of language certifications
  7. Disability ≥66% or law 104 art. 3, paragraph 3
